A global supply-use table in physical units for modelling.

The environmentally-extended supply-use database eNextGen and the SESAM research group of Politecnico di Milano build on top of EXIOBASE Hybrid v3.3.18 with MARIO - electricity realigned to recent years, innovative steelmaking and hydrogen routes added, and an open-access working pipeline, so the table can be rebuilt, checked and cited.

How it is built

Five steps, all reproducible from open inputs.

Parse

EXIOBASE Hybrid v3.3.18 becomes a MARIO database โ€” physical units, supply-use form.

Update domestic electricity mix

Generation mixes from EMBER and bilateral trade from ENTSO-E, pulled live from nxbase's open API.

Pool electricity

A fictitious supply activity absorbs each region's consumption, so every sector consumes the mix it actually consumes โ€” imports included.

Add new routes

Innovative steelmaking and hydrogen activities, with blast furnace gas emissions reallocated back to iron and steel.

Publish

The table goes to Zenodo; the resulting footprints go back into nxbase as an openly queryable source.

The electricity representation

Consumption mix, not just generation

This section is quite technical, but helps you understanding our approach. In each region a fictitious 'Electricity - supply' activity absorbs all domestic and imported electricity consumption and produces a fictitious 'Electricity - need' commodity. Trade then lives on the supply matrix, in a Chenery-Moses-like arrangement. This is what makes the footprints comparable with the literature: a country importing clean power sees it.

Every sector buys electricity straight from the use matrix: domestic from its own region, imported from the other. Trade is scattered over as many cells as there are sector-origin pairs, and supply stays block-diagonal.

Imported electricity leaves the use matrix (0) and reappears in supply, in two cells only. Every sector now buys Electricity need, the sum of domestic and imported: a single mix per region instead of one import structure per sector.

Known and declared limitations

A dataset is only as useful as the assumptions you can see. We always cared about transparency and reproducibility

The base table is still 2011

Everything except electricity keeps EXIOBASE Hybrid's 2011 structure. We update where it changes the results most and say so, rather than implying a 2025 economy.

Electricity trade data is European

ENTSO-E covers the European grid. Non-European countries are treated as domestic-only โ€” their electricity footprints barely move, but the assumption is there.
